A truly Oregon berry, Marion blackberries or Marionberries were developed at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon.  A cross between two blackberry varieties, the Marionberry has distinctively bold flavors and rich, deep colors.  One of Stahlbush’s signature products, Marion blackberries are an excellent treat on their own or added to lemonades or sparkling water.  They are also excellent in smoothies, desserts or breakfast items.
Behind the painting, “The Color of Fruit”:
Mary’s Peak, Black Butte, Mt. Jefferson and Mt. Hood are featured in many of my paintings. There is a glorious relationship between the mountains and their valleys. The Coastal Mountain range and the Cascade Mountain range form the two walls to the Willamette Valley. The rich soils, clean and flavorful water, and mild growing climate allow us to grow some of the best fruits and vegetables in the world. Over 220 agricultural crops are grown in this valley, and the Marion Blackberries or Marionberries are some of my favorite! I painted “The Color of Fruit,” as my depiction of the world-class conditions in the Willamette Valley that help us to grow plump, rich blueberries with vibrant colors. – Karla S.
